Rubbish is a program that teaches kids to express themselves by re-purposing the materials around them to participate in arts and recreational activities.
Rubbish encourages teacher-student collaboration to engage students with activities that challenge their spontaneous construction- based thinking. Play and experimentation take the lead in the curriculum, so that kids allow themselves to test their theories and try again. There are no wrong ways of problem solving, only more efficient ways.
Rubbish is program for creative kids to re-purpose the materials around them. Rubbish will collaborate with after-school programs beginning with 4th and 5th graders in Springfield Massachusetts, throughout the year, as well as summer camps. These workshop promote learning through creativity and spontaneous play. After the one-week workshop (5 days), teachers can refer to the guide on the Rubbish website, so that they may continue the workshop on their own.
The activity guide contains the fiv e activities of the Rubbish workshop as well as a week’s worth of games with tips on ho w to create more games. It will also list recommendations on how to find materials for those games.
The website celebrates the kids and the work they produce, and builds a community around their work that can be viewed by their peers. Each week, students who have completed the workshop will upload their work. Teachers will also be able to post the games that they have created and discuss and share future game ideas with other teachers.
